What is Microsoft Teams and how is it organized?
Microsoft Teams is a collaboration app that helps your team stay organized and communicate in one place. Inside the app, you’ll see a Teams icon that shows all the teams you’re part of.
Each team is made up of channels, which are usually organized by topic, project, or department. Within each channel, your team can:
- Hold meetings
- Have ongoing conversations (posts)
- Share and access files
This structure helps you reimagine how work is grouped: instead of scattered emails and documents, conversations and content live together in the relevant channel.
How do I chat, call, and meet in Microsoft Teams?
Teams gives you several ways to communicate with colleagues:
- Chat: Click the Chat button to start a conversation with one or several people. Just type their names, then send your message.
- Calls: From a chat, you can start video or audio calls directly, which helps you move from text to live discussion quickly.
- Meetings: In the Meetings area, you can view your weekly schedule and easily create new meetings. This makes it simpler to coordinate time with your team and keep track of upcoming discussions.
Where do I find files and track activity in Teams?
Teams centralizes your content and updates so you don’t have to hunt through multiple tools:
- Files: Click the Files icon on the left to see all files that have ever been shared by your team. This helps you keep documents, presentations, and other assets in one place.
- Activity: The Activity view shows everything that has happened across your teams, including unread messages, replies, mentions, and more. It’s a quick way to catch up after time away.
- Search and commands: Use the command box at the top of the screen to search for specific people, messages, or files, and to take quick actions or launch apps. This rethinks how you navigate work by putting search and commands in a single, consistent place.
